Our enduring fascination with our epics, the Ramayana and Mahabharata, exemplifies another incident in "Sundarkanda" from Ramayana.
Now on a mission in Lanka, Hanuman is pondering as he looks down from the massive tree:
“What would have happened if I was not there?”
In "Ashok Vatika," Ravana rushed to kill Sita Devi with a sword out of rage. At that moment, Hanuman had the urge to grab his sword and chop off his head! The next instant, however, he noticed that Mandodari was holding Ravana's hand!
He was ecstatic to see this! He began to think, "I would have given the impression that someone else would have saved Sita Devi if I had not been there."
We frequently experience such illusions:What would have happened if I had not been there?’
But what happened?
The Lord entrusted the task of saving Sita Devi to Ravana’s wife!
Hanuman then realized that the Lord has the ability to get any task completed by whoever he chooses!.
Later, when Trijata declared that a monkey had arrived in Lanka and would set the country on fire! Hanuman became very worried because the Lord had not asked him to burn Lanka. What should she do now? Whatever the Lord wishes!
When Hanuman was attacked by Ravana's soldiers brandishing swords, he made no attempt to defend himself. And when "Vibhishana" arrived and advised the King that it was wrong to kill a messenger, Hanuman realized that the Lord had done this to save him.
The moment Ravana declared that the monkey would not be killed but that its tail should be wrapped in cloth, smeared with ghee, and set ablaze was the height of surprise.
Hanuman began to believe that Trijata of Lanka was telling the truth; if not, where would he obtain clothing, ghee, oil, and fire to burn Lanka?
However, the Lord also had Ravana make that arrangement!
'What is the surprise in having a poor me do his work when he can get it done even from Ravana?' Hanuman thought.
So always keep in mind that God's law governs everything that occurs in this world! All of us are merely His instruments!
Therefore, never give the impression that...
Had I not been present, what might have happened?
"Neither am I the best, nor am I special; I am just a small servant of God.".
